Yes, you read that right! Walk & talk is a way for therapist & client to connect in a different way. There are several reasons why this works & a plethora of therapeutic benefits.
Lets start with the basics, what is walk and talk therapy?
Therapist & client meet at a designated location and go for a walk along a pre-planned route. The client discusses their thoughts, feelings & process life experiences just like they would over Telehealth or in person settings.
What are the benefits?
Being outside, in God’s creation often allows for deeper emotional connection to self. Moving while talking can provide a great sense of release that is unmatched to other settings.
Outdoor therapy can be helpful for individuals who do not feel comfortable in other settings. Especially those who feel “stuck” in therapy or who are brand new to therapy. Individuals with lived traumas can benefit from being away from a clinical setting and are often able to process more deeply outdoors. Sunshine and fresh air is important for us all, setting aside time weekly for self care can be difficult. Walk & talk therapy is a wonderful way to begin to meet your self care goals.
Are there any cons?
There can be, yes. Being out in public does not allow for the same level of confidentiality as other settings. We will discuss strategies for privacy related concerns during our planning session.
Walk & talk is not right for everyone, specifically those with mobility issues.
What if I need a bio break?
Our pre planned route will have restrooms and places to sit along the way.
Do we have to walk & talk every session?
No, this can be done as often as you would like, weather & safety permitting.
